Red Hook Walking Tour

 redhookrulesspraypainted.jpg

So I get an email from Slow Food New York.  Red Hook Walking tour next week!  What do you do???  uhh you go.  Bekah Wilce and Matt Feifarek members of Slow Food, organized this very awesome tour.

It all started with a 15 minute ride on a NY water taxi to Red Hook, Brooklyn.  The sun godsblessed us with a picture perfect day.  It's great, the water taxi docks right in front of  Fairway.  Nice!!!!  To be honest, I would much rather take the ride to Red Hook than to battle my way to the upper westside and deal with thousands of people in the store. Fairway Brooklyn was great. I was actually able to stretch out my arms.

As much as I enjoyed my moment in the store  I was so ready to explore the town.  Enter Matt and Bekah,  with maps in tow  we headed over to Added Value Farm. Now, if you want to see what some amazing people in this world are capable of doing with a small plot of land, head over to this farm and prepare to be wowed.  Check out their website and support the cause!!!

After a wonderful tour of the farm and an intro to the produce and veggies that are grown there, we headed over to the baseball fields.  Here, a group of Latin American street food vendors congregate for one reason.  To sell you some amazing home style food.  My fiancée and I ate very well for a total of $12 dollars.  Figure $4 for a plate of 3 roasted plantains, pupusas and a tamale. We also enjoyed two agua frescas for $2 each (we had an horchata and a melon agua fresca). We decided that this meal required some spice so we also enjoyed the chiles rellenos ($2 each).

So what next???  Beer of course.  Off to Sixpoint Craft Ales Brewery. Oh my goodness.  I had some favorite beers before, but they totally moved down the list after tasting these beers.  One word... Flavor!!!  Wow, also the tour was just amazing.  Thank You Shane.  Shane Welch, brew master for this fine artisanal beer producer walked us through the process of brewing.  We tasted barley malt, we smelled different types of hops and then we had some beer from the conditioning tanks.  Now that surely doesn't happen all the time.

We all then headed towards LeNell's which is a wine and spirit boutique.  Very knowledgeable staff and just the loveliest bunch of bourbon drinkers I've ever met.  Oh and thank you for introducing us to an amazing bottle of wheat whiskey, Bernheim. Just as it's advertised.  Soft and sweet. We are truly in love!!!

By the time that we were done at LeNell's we realized that our day was done.  The last water taxi was going to be arriving in half an hour and we still had to go to buy some cheese at Fairway.  So we did what any person in our position would do.  We ran.

See you soon Red Hook!!!!!  Check out the pics here!
